Twenty Years in Ministry

“Are leaders born or are they made?” This one of the first questions I ask my students in the leadership classes I teach at Baptist University of Americas. After much discussion we try to come up with an answer. The answer usually lies some where in the middle. Many people are born with natural leadership qualities and some of those people have made the worst leaders in history. Others may not have been born with as much natural abilities but have stepped into turbulent times throughout history and done remarkable things, at times saving lives.

Our world is in desperate need of good leaders, everywhere. “When is someone old enough to be a leader?” If we look to examples from the Bible we would have to say during childhood leaders can emerge. David was probably about 12 when he fought Goliath. Jesus was close to that age when he was teaching in the temple. And the boy who gave of his lunch for Jesus to provide one of the most talked about miracles was not any older. So are children capable of leadership today? I believe the answer is YES. Children have a remarkable ability to get to the core of things in an unfiltered, honest way. Many times when adults are trying to say things the “right” way, children will just say and ask what is needed. Encourage your children to voice their opinions, listen to them and help guide them, but do not hush them. We are going to need them in our world to stand up and lead so we need to begin my helping them do it now.

As school begins make some special time to talk with your child about what is going on in their lives, talk about various situations and help guide them in how to do the right things. I am also encouraging all of our Sunday school teachers and Wednesday night leaders to do the same. Talk about life with kids and help them figure out how God’s story and purpose intersects with theirs!!
