Sermon The Power of Love to Build, Heal & Guard Our Hearts

Is your heart broken? Is your broken heart healing? Though our hearts are vulnerable, they are built to last when they are built with God’s strength. Matters of the heart are forceful. So all meaningful conversations about love have to make sense to our hearts. As Pascal, master mathematician, became a believer he said, “The heart has reasons that reason knows not of.”

Along the way, we guard our hearts as we we try to figure it all out. The apostle Thomas shows how we can build our hearts (John 11:16); guard our hearts (14:5-6); and recover when our hearts are broken (20:24-29).

First, Thomas questioned. Then he committed. Seeing that Jesus intended to put His life at risk by going to Jerusalem to help His friend Lazarus, Thomas said “Let us go also, that we may die with him.” (John 11:1-16) Thomas’ commitment meant he was all in.

Secondly, after Jesus told the Apostles not to let their hearts be troubled because they would know the way to be with Him after His death, – Thomas said, “Lord we do not know where you are going, how can we know the way?” Thomas’ question set up Jesus to give one of the most powerful responses in all of the Bible, “I am the way, the truth, and the life, one comes to the Father through Me.” (John 14:5-6). Through Thomas’ question, our hearts can see our own questions being answered. We can see that Jesus is the way to our heart’s true home. Jesus is life.

Third, Thomas’ doubt came after his heart was broken. Upon seeing Jesus die on the cross, he felt betrayed. He was depressed. His broken heart led the resurrected Christ to reveal Himself to Thomas. Upon seeing Him, Thomas’ heart crisis was healed and he gave one of the most beautiful testimonies in Scripture, “My Lord and my God.”(John 20:24-29)

Where is your heart leading you? Let your heart lead you to your Lord and your God. A faith that sees through doubt sets us free to live through the resurrected presence of Christ. Our fear of loving finds a resting place in Christ’s empty tomb.

Life is about love, and love is about relationships. To grasp love we must be grasped by love. God loves us and when we decide to trust in and receive that love, that is when we have the resource to truly learn how to love.
