Sermon: Is Your Heart Singing? Singing God’s Tune For You!
Scripture: Psalm 125-126
September 27, 2014
Joy is a choice! Only a thin line frequently separates a smile from our tears. Joy and sadness are common companions. We don’t need to be afraid of either. Our tears, when prayerfully given to God, are invested into the hands of the Creator. Who then shapes our hurting hearts by His tender and tough mercies.
We don’t get through sadness by fleeing our feelings. We must invest them into that which is greater than our sorrows. When God’s redemptive power becomes their resting place, like the grave was to the crucified Christ, then they are resurrected as a sign that God wins. Joy trumps tears because God trumps death.
Then our tears serve a redemptive purpose by:
1. TENDERIZING us to feel with others who are touched by sadness. Lessons learned from our sorrow help us to see the tears of others more clearly.(Think, “They who mourn shall be comforted… Blessed are the merciful for they shall obtain mercy.” Mt. 5:4,7)
2. TEACHING us that joy is grown within us as we journey along the spiritual path. Many stops are required along the way where we can regroup our resources from what the journey is demanding of our body, mind, and spirit. (Think, “I lift my eyes to the hills, and I ask who will help me as I make this journey? Then in my need I see more clearly that my help comes from the Lord, maker of heaven & earth.” Psalm 121:1-2).
3. TRANSFORMING us into servant leaders who share in God’s joy by healing hurts and building hope in our fractured world. If we don’t allow the joy to grow from grief then our hurts will grow into anger, spite, and despair. (Think, “the one who goes out weeping, bearing the seed for sowing, shall come home with shouts of joy, bringing with him the harvest… Peace be upon Jerusalem.” Psalm 126:6; 125:5c).
