How To Understand Today’s Church?
Missional. Attractional. Organic. These 3 terms describe how God is shaping Trinity Baptist Church. They are also 3 frequent terms used to describe the 21st century Church. What do they mean?
MISSIONAL is who we are wherever we are as Christians. We are God’s missionary people. Your life is a living mission of God at work in the world. (Eph. 2:10) We do missions in our family, our work place, our neighborhood – wherever we go. We are God’s appointed reconciliation ambassadors in our troubled world. (2 Cor. 5:17-20) Believers are the Church and Trinity Baptist Church is filled with believers doing the gospel in everyday life.
We also do missions as an organized body of believers. We have a dynamic Missions Team and hundreds of church members who do missions across San Antonio and in global regions. We make missions happen through more than 50 sustainable mission activities. We are a recognized leader in the world of missions. And nearly 20% of our annual financial resources are used for direct mission work.
ATTRACTIONAL is who we are by what we offer in ministry. From our worship services, to Sunday School, to small groups, to our Faith Family Nights on Wednesday evenings, to special events like our recent Modern Families Workshop and upcoming Upward Basketball. Attractional means we build opportunities on our 3 campuses that “attract” seekers and believers to engage the gospel through what we are offering.
You will notice there is a “missional” connection to most every “attractional” event we provide. Our 3 campuses are “attractional” in nature and missional in purpose. Every square inch of our 342,000 square feet is dedicated to express the gospel. Jesus spoke “attractional” language when he said the world will know (be attracted to) we are His disciples by how we love one another.” (John 13:34-35) Paul wrote with “attractional” images in the 1 Corinthians 13 love chapter.
ORGANIC is how we grow and structure ourselves. The Church in general and Trinity Baptist Church in particular is an organism of the resurrected body of Christ. (1 Cor. 11-12) We are an organized living expression of Christ in the world. Organic means the natural growth and development of God’s organization. Spirit shaping the structure, and not structure controlling the Spirit, is the quintessence of the organic church. We ask, “who does God want us to be?” And then we organize ourselves to be that body of believers. And then we allow the Spirit to shape us continuously.
Our 2015-16 Ministry Plan, “Challenged By God’s Love” is missional, attractional, and organic. With a working frame of these 3 terms, we can better understand how God is working in and through Trinity.
