Jesus promised that “For where two or three are gathered in My name, I will be among them.” Jesus was with the Bible Study group at Emmanuel AME Church in Charleston, South Carolina. They were gathered in their historic and sacred church doing what Christians do – praying, studying Scripture, sharing, and welcoming strangers.
That particular stranger gave into evil desires and killed 9 precious people. We grieve. Christ in their midst grieved. May the murderer repent. May the families of these 9 Charleston martyrs be consoled by Christ in their midst and our tear filled prayers. We also lift up Christians around the world being persecuted.
We will continue to do what the Charleston martyrs died doing. The flesh and blood of their faith stirs within us. We are one, united in Christ Jesus giving the witness of our lives so people will believe and our world be transformed.
This Sunday in solidarity, our church bells will ring at noon for 10 minutes along with other church bells across the city… A few years ago, I co-edited and wrote for a publication entitled, “Healing Hurts & Building Hope In Our Fractured World.” I’ll have extra copies of the work available for interested people this Sunday at the Welcome Center.
