Martha was born in Mexia, TX and grew up in Premont TX. After graduating from high school, she came to San Antonio to attend nursing school at Baptist Memorial Hospital. She received her RN degree in 1952 and accepted a job at the Robert B. Green TB Clinic.

After their wedding in September 1952, Charles and Martha moved to Abilene where he graduated from Hardin Simmons University with a B.A. in psychology. He later attended Southwestern Seminary where he earned a degree in psychology and counseling and a Master of Divinity in Theology. Charles accepted a call to Trinity Baptist in El Reno, OK and served as the minister for three years. Later, he was a minister at Maysville, OK First Baptist.

He joined the Air Force again in the early 1960’s as a chaplain. His assignments included Kirtland AFB NM, McConnell AFB KS, Torrejon AB Spain, McCoy AFB FL, one year in Viet Nam, and an AFIT assignment to Claremont School of Theology where he received a Doctor of Ministry in pastoral care and counseling. His last assignments were chaplain at the Air Force University in Montgomery, AL and chief, permanent party chaplain at Lackland where he retired in 1980.

Martha practiced nursing until Charles finished college and seminary. She worked in psychiatric hospitals in CA, AL and at Villa Rosa in San Antonio, as well the UTSA Student Health Center.

After Charles retired, he did pastoral counseling and marriage and family therapy in the Department of Religion at the Baptist Hospital. Sometime later, he established a private practice with Clint and Pam Dunagan in San Antonio. Martha became qualified as a massage therapist and practiced at the same location.

Martha and Charles have six children: Kathy Thayer, Nowata OK; Karen Prewitt, Darleen Kay Park, Kimi Lee Bailey and Keri Demmaree, all in San Antonio and Kip Duvall, Dripping Springs. They also have 14 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren.

The entire Prewitt family enjoyed camping during their assignments in Europe. They outfitted a VW bus with everything needed for camping and, in three summers, camped from Madrid to Rome to Portugal with six children, ages 7-16.

Charles and Martha were also avid tennis players and played in tournaments in various countries where they were assigned and 27 years into retirement.

When asked for a statement on love, Charles gave this.

We have been married 62 years. For us love is countless cycles and seasons of high hopes and low disappointments, of wandering along paths of spiritual and psychic unconsciousness to find on the other side God’s clear unconditional and unchanging love: the very Source of love, of walking together through several ‘valleys of the shadow of death’ and many, many mountain top sunrises of birth and life, and arriving at a place where we see there is no better place than here and now—always.
