John was raised in San Antonio, went through the Alamo Heights School system, then Baylor University and his Seminary work in theology was done through the Fuller Seminary extension in San Antonio. He has served in four churches and for the past 27 years at Trinity Baptist Church in San Antonio, where he is currently the Associate Pastor.

John is married to the former Darleen Prewitt and they have four children ranging in age from a college graduate to a seven year old. John also serves as a Bible teacher, speaker, singer, musician, writer, and consultant. He likes adventure, the outdoors, and friendly people! He was described by his former pastor as "occasionally brilliant!"
